Nigeria Power Sector Intelligence Report — Q1 2026

This edition introduces the Nextier Nigeria Power Sector Market Index (N-PSMI), a quarterly composite score that measures the health of NESI across four dimensions: generation, transmission, commercial viability, and customer service.
Q1 2026 scores 62.7 out of 100. We classify that as Challenged.
The report examines what sits beneath that number. Generation availability fell every month of the quarter, with only 30% of installed capacity actually producing electricity by March. Two grid collapses occurred within a single week in January. Government support covered roughly 37 kobo of every naira flowing through the sector. And while metering reached its fastest quarterly deployment on record, the improvement has not yet translated into commercial recovery.
With the discontinuation of the current subsidy arrangement now signalled, this edition establishes a baseline before that transition begins, so that its effects can be measured rather than argued about.
The full N-PSMI methodology is published in the report
